Emerald Jewelry

Emeralds are the birthstone for May, they’re also my birthstone and although I wasn’t impressed when I was a teen – I preferred opals, rubies, amethyst and topaz – I absolutely adore emeralds these days.   The deep green of an emerald can be mesmerizing and I’m not the only person who thinks so.   Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Taylor and Angelina Jolie are just three other people who love to wear emeralds.
The name emerald doesn’t have some fancy meaning it is, in fact, just translated as green gemstone.   There has been many myths and beliefs associated with this fascinating gemstone, however dating back to ancient times.
Part of the reason that emeralds have been held in high esteem in many different societies from Eastern to the Western worlds has to do with it’s color.   The green color of emeralds has been seen to represent Springtime and new life and love.   It is also recognized as a ‘holy’ color in Islam.
The Greek philosopher Pliny is said to have said that the green of an emerald could gladden the eye without tiring it…..I must say I’d never be tired of looking at emeralds so we must be on the same wavelength :D

Emeralds have been adorned by the rich and famous for centuries, it is said that Cleopatra loved emeralds and off course who played Cleopatra on the big screen? Why none other than another famous, emerald lover Elizabeth Taylor who has owned several lovely emeralds over the years.

As far as gemstones go emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl and they get their beautiful green coloring from trace amounts of the mineral chromium and sometimes vanadium. It is because of the beryl that emeralds can claim aquamarines as their cousin as aquamarines are also made from a variety of beryl.

Emeralds are such a rare and valuable gemstone that a number of them are called created emeralds this means that they are synthetically made in a laboratory. Personally I still think they look great, but be aware of what you are buying.

Emerald Pendants

Check out a few of my favorite emerald pendants right here - Emerald Pendants.

Did you know that emeralds are the only gemstone to have a cut named after them? The emerald cut is a square or rectangular cut containing tapered corners. This cut was originally developed to help to reduce the amount of pressure applied during the cutting process. Emeralds are very sensitive to knocks. It has also been found to showcase the emerald’s strongest color. It’s because of this secondary quality that the emerald cut has been used in so many different gems and is very much a part of a jeweler’s vocabulary.

The first emerald I ever received was a small emerald ring from my parents because it was my birthstone. This was a gift I really cherished and I plan to give my daughter a birthstone ring when she’s older as well.   On that note let's look at.....
