Watch as the figure enters your bookshelf and emerges the other side - it really doesn't need much explaining does it?
Fans can imagine that their bookends are test subjects at Aperture Science, it'll sort out which visitors are fans or not - will they recognize that the bookends are representative of the Portal or will they just think they look cool?
If they start to mention Cave Johnson you know that you've found someone else who shares your 'fandom'.
Personally I just think they're cool for anyone to have on their bookshelf, but that's just me.....
